It was important to carry forward some of the "look" while modernizing the cabin for current function and to keep visual access to some of the remaining, beautiful Danish joinery and construction. This photo was taken in the mid-1980s by then owner, shipwright and sailor, Pete Lamb.

Starboard bulkhead with new Wana

The original design of the bulkhead included a solid wall/cabinet here. I opted to leave it open to the forpeak, but double the bulkhead for strength and to gain back some of the storage that original cabinetry achieved. The curve mirrors Pax hull shape, and was originally something I wanted to pull forward from my years on Tethys. There, original builder had used cherry to create a gorgeous curved framing that gave a sense of separation between galley and main salon without solid walls.

Port bulkhead and bunk, almost finished

Port bulkhead curve mirrors the starboard sid and joins to the center, Danish inspired look even with new 6'5" bunk in place. Fir ceilings from previous owner were reused to make this a functional storage berth with two hatches. Safety gear (flares, horn, fire extinguisher) will be stored close to companionway end. I made wood bungs, carved and prepped the wood for final oil/varnishing before Festival. Here, is the progress as of August 29, 2009.

Measure twice, at least

Diana Talley checking and rechecking shapes and measurements prior to final install of the Wana. As with all old boats, modifications must be done on site as every plank, every frame, every piece of wood is a little different. This is the art, the uniqueness, the personal touch and contribution of every person and every part of a wooden boat.
